I Want To Play On Poker Stars But I’m Not Sure Where To Start?

I am not a beginner but I am not a pro. I want to play for money but only want to deposit 40 bucks. Do you think it would be better to play the 1/2 dollar cash tables or a 10 dollar tournament? Does it even matter?

Listen to the advice everyone else has already provided. It’s unwise to invest more than about 5% of your bankroll in any one game/ tourney. $40 probably won’t last you 40 minutes there.
There are some damn good players at surprisingly small limits on Pokerstars. The $5 and $10 tourneys are often full of people playing 4-10 tables simultaneously and doing so for a profit. I even ran across one big time shark (that normally plays much higher stakes) in a $10 tourney the other day. Are you sure you want to test your luck against them?
And in a $1/$2 cash game, you’ll either have to pucker up so tight you’ll cry or gamble right out of the gate and get lucky a couple times.
Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of fish there too, but as the virgin, you’ll be the biggest.
Bring at least $100 and start with ultra low-limit cash games or $2 tourneys.

I have to say, it does sound like you are a complete novice. Anyone who has played poker for any time at all will tell you that $40 is nowhere near enough to sit right in a $1/$2 game, unless you want to play limit and very tight. Also anyone with experience will tell you that risking 25% of your bank roll on a single tournament is also a very bad idea.
What I suggest is that you deposit $50, that way you can get yourself the maximum bonus cash that Stars offers.
I then suggest you play in very low limit games like 25c/50c at the most. Or $2 tournaments. You are starting with such a tiny amount of money, you are going to be severely restricted as to what you can play.
Quite honestly if you can’t easily afford to deposit $100 or so, I question whether you should even be gambling at all.
Once you can consistently beat the micro limits, you can move up a bit. But be careful to protect your bank roll. Remember that online play is not like playing in a casino, where they wouldn’t even bother to spread such low limit games.

10 dollars tournament would be an HORRIBLE choice…. you can afford only 4 buy-in.. You are 100% sure you’ll finish in the money before going broke?
Even if you COULD (and you don’t know yet) beat them on a regular basis… downswings happen, and losing 4 tournanements in a row is pretty common.
With only 40$, play the smallest limit possible.. and if you can beat it, go up ONE limit ( and not like 5 limits higher.. ).. if you beat this one too, move up… etc..
You’ll sure think it suck winning like 0.20$/hour…
But winning 0.20$ is better than losing your 40$ in 2 hours.
When you’ll see that the lowest limit are easy for you, now you try a little harder…
(Oh, and also… choose carefully where you deposit, and how. You can get lot’s of bonus, so your 40$ will because 80 easily.. )

Kotto, Hi, first you can deposit as little as $10.00 with a MC or VISA with no fees, or you can send them a cashiers check, minimum $100.00, but I believe there is a small handling fee for that something like $3.00. What I believe you are looking for is to play Texas Holdem. You can either sit in a ring game which is 9 players with varying limits from 1 cent on up. You could play in 9, 18, 27 ,45 player sit n go’s with $1.10 buyins on up, they last about 1 and a half to 2 hrs long. You may want to play in larger tourneys with buy in from .10 cents on up with several thousand players that can last up to 8 to 10 hours. I think you would get the best fun out of the $1.10 No limit sit n go’s that start when the appropriate number of players are enrolled or the $1.10 tourneys that start every hour or so at the set time through out the day and night. Depends on how good you are or are not, or how fast you want to lose your money. Also, you get to play your Frequent Player Points off afterward. Usually for every single dollar you spend in a tourney you get 1FPP. If you buy into a $10.00 game you usually only get 5 FPP. The lowest fpp games are for 10 fpp and up. The last brief note I wish to say is that pokerstars.net does play only for free games. And the person whom said pokerstars.com only plays for real money was mistaken. I have been playing for free and real money on Pokerstars.com for over two years, and love it. Anyway, there are many choices and a lot of fun to be had at PokerStars.com, I highly recommend this safe site. My last deposit was $25.00 over a year ago and I am still playing on it, I like the little games also…Good Luck.. .. ..pcr

If you want to play for fun, then you might want to download the software from pokerstars.net For real money you have to download the software from pokerstars.com. And I believe the minimum deposit is 50 dollars. Try playing the sit n go’s on the play money side, and if you still feel the urge to play real money, well I guess play the smallest buy in.

If you want to play limit texas holdem on cash tables, you need 300 big blind bankroll ($300 for 1/2 dollar cash table).
For no limit cash games you need much more money. You need 50 times of you stacks. It means if you play 1/2 dollar cash tables with full stack ($200), you need $10 000 bankroll.
For 10 dollar tournament, you need 500 dollars on poker room account
